Wiśniowa

The village of Wiśniowa appears in historic documents as early as the 15th century, when it was simply called Stara Wieś ("Old Village"). Its current name likely comes from the abundance of cherry trees growing all around the village ("wiśnia" means "cherry" in Polish).

Many noble houses were involved in Wiśniowa's history, including Bogoria, Rytwiański, Łaski, Tarło, Kołłątaj families. Kasper Dymitrowski bought Wiśniowa off the Łaski family in the second half of the 16th century. Dymitrowski's son, Jan, built a wooden manor house in 1578. The Tarło noble family took over Wiśniowa after Dymitrowski family.

Rafał Kołłątaj married the daughter of Tarło, and in doing so his family had claimed Wiśniowa. The most famous member of the Kołłątaj family, Hugo Kołłątaj – who is notable for co-authoring the Constitution of 3 May 1791 – was actually not very involved with his home, Wiśniowa, due to political, official activities keeping him occupied. He visited Wiśniowa on several occasions, his final visit took place in August of 1811. Six months later Hugo Kołłątaj died in Warsaw, where he had spent his twilight years. Before his death Kołłątaj explicitly stated to his private secretary and confidant Michał Szymański that he "wishes for his heart to rest in Wiśniowa". In accordance with that final will, his heart was transported to Wiśniowa. It rests at the local parish church in Wiśniowa Poduchowna, hidden beneath a memorial plaque dedicacted to Hugo.

The manor house of Kołłątaj and other noble families is still standing in Wiśniowa. Its origins lie at the first half of the 18th century when the house of Karol Tarło was built. Towards the end of 18th century Rafał Kołłataj expanded the manor, repurposing it into official headquarters of the Kołłątaj family. Another renovation took place during the second half of 19th century, and the building has survived in that shape to this day.

An Elementary School and a Memorial Hall, both dedicated to Hugo Kołłątaj, have been in Wiśniowa since the 1960s. The Memorial Hall possesses several dozen of books written by Kołłątaj along with other writers' works about his life, and numerous portraits of the great Pole. The manor is located in a park with several towering trees, some of which are registered natural monuments.

By the end of 1999 there were 672 people residing in Wiśniowa, in 2006 – 628 residents, in 2012 – 616 residents, and by the end of 2015 there were 617 people living there.
